The Sci-fi and Fantasy genre are where movies of epic proportion come from. They include mind-blowing sceneries, engaging story lines and the most alluring heroes and heroines. But sometimes we forget the little guy. That special someone without whom the story would just not be the same. That someone is a sub character. No he’s not the hero (or the villain) and yes he’s usually on the sidelines but the experience the character provides is quintessential. You’ll understand….
#10: Jar-Jar binks (Star Wars I: The Phantom menace 1999)At number ten we have Jar-Jar binks, the unequivocal red Gungan who first made an appearance in the 1999 Star Wars movie. This is a character NO ONE can forget. Everyone either loves him or loathes him. Personally I take the side of the latter mainly because he is one annoying little prick. Every time he comes on screen I just want to choke his high pitched, nasal sounding ass. As much as I despise his very name I don’t think the telling of the first chapter of Star Wars would have been what it was, pretty poor. Regardless of how good or bad the movie was criticized, it is what it is and it’s not the same without our unforgettable fiend (yes fiend not friend) Jar-Jar. | ![]() |
#9: Robin (Batman Forever 1995)Here’s a guy who your memory can’t erase. Although the movie itself wasn’t received so well Robin as a Character can’t be to blame. This was the first time he wasn’t made out to look like a pasty little white boy. For once, his costume looked cool instead of that old tight and creepy one that made your eyes feel violated. I think that might be the reason behind the adaptation of Nightwing after Robin matured because think about it, you can’t be a grown man wearing bright red and neon green, it’s just not fair for those who are trying to raise children. | ![]() |
#8: Exterminator (Jumanji 1995)Remember watching Jumanji for the first time? Remember the experience as a child? I remember seeing that odd-looking man dressed like colonel mustard walking around town dressed in an 1800’s poachers uniform carrying some kind of super lethal weapon and thinking to myself, dam he’s badass. For that and his awesome moustache I’m giving him a spot on this list. | ![]() |
#7: Tron (Tron 1982)Although his name is in the title, Tron was actually more of a supporting character. This movie was made in the era where video gaming was the deepest craze. Tron, the character, had the cliché “good guy who saves the day” persona and so to the viewer he symbolized all our favourite video game heroes. This was like watching Mario, link and Donkey Kong put together. This was a first in film history. | ![]() |
#6: Seamus Finnigan (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone 2001)It’s a name that doesn’t come to mind right away so let me help you jog your memory. Seamus is the character, in the Harry Potter series, who always has something explode in his face. Remember the rum exploding in his face? How about the potion exploding in his face when competing for the Felix Felicis aka. Good luck potion? Seamus is one of those faces you can’t forget and good ongoing joke. | ![]() |
#5: Gollum (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring 2001)Who hasn’t had his dreams haunted by this creepy faced monster? I think he was the most well developed monster in all of cinema history. This guy was the best. He was two faced, ugly, amiable at times and always talked in the third person. I remember how much of a phenomenon he was when all the kids in school and on the internet started to impersonate him. Yup Gollum is undoubtedly one the the most memorable ones. | ![]() |
#4: Dr. Emmet brown (Back To The Future 1985)This movie was made awesome by the great level of science babble. It opened up the imagination of young and old and really dug into the what ifs of time travel. Christopher Lloyd’s funny face is what makes the professor so nutty. Without the good doctor to guide us through all the nauseating explanations of what happens when, this movie would have been lame. | ![]() |
#3: R2D2 (Star Wars IV: A New Hope 1977)The simple white and blue droid first made his appearance in the 1977 milestone of a movie Star Wars. Who can forget the adorable yet spunky little robot along with his companion C-3P0. R2 was something that the masses fell head over heels for. They loved him so much that he made reappearances in the rest of the movies and played a key role. He was also a very important character in the most recent Lucas arts productions The Clone Wars the television series. He’s the first robot with an rude attitude making him one of our most memorable. | ![]() |
#2: Spock (Star Trek 1966-2009)Here is a special character. One so special I’m not specifying a single movie. No, not for Spock. No one can dishonour him like that. He is cult legend. Everyone knows Spock! Even those who don’t associate with Star Trek know Spock, the name, the image and, most significantly, the haircut. For his being an icon he is number two on this list. | ![]() |
#1: Marvin (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy 2005)Out of all the side Characters I truly think Marvin takes the cake, ranking at number one for all the lulz he’s given us. His personality itself is a gimmick. He’s a robot designed to be human-like but he turns out clinically depressed even though he has the brain the size of a planet (that’s says something about humans doesn’t it?). Top it off he’s played by Alan Rickman aka. Snape from the Harry Potter movies. His voice is so uniquely monotonous that in a muggle cast show they were pointing out how he talks like Snape even in REAL life! Even in the books Marvin is a non-stop train of comic relief. He is awesome enough to be the best side-character of all times. | ![]() |
